Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Skybrary: New Customers

Does Skybrary just play videos from the original TV series?
Nope! This is a completely new digital library service, with hundreds of interactive books and exclusive Video Field Trips hosted by LeVar Burton.

Where can I get Skybrary?
Skybrary is currently available for computers on the Web (right here on our site) and can be downloaded from your iPad or iPhone through the Apple app store.

What age is this for? Will you make it for older children?
We believe Skybrary's service and content are best suited for 2-9 year olds. However, we find that many older children enjoy the service too, since reading level may not be tied to age. Based on our experience, Skybrary can also be a great tool for students with special needs or who have developmental delays as they work through their literacy needs and goals.

What kinds of books are in Skybrary?
In Skybrary, your child will be able to choose books from leading children's publishers on 7 themed islands—each home to hundreds of quality books and videos that celebrate diversity, family, and the world around us. Young readers are free to explore the topics they love most as well as discover new areas of interest. Each book has been lightly animated and has the option of being read aloud by a narrator using the Read To Me feature.

Are there subscription discounts available for schools and libraries?
Schools and libraries who are interested in purchasing our educational product, at a discount or as a bulk purchase should contact skybrary@RIF.org

How does the free trial work?
When you sign up you will start with a one-month free trial with unrestricted access to all of the books and video field trips in our library, available instantly on your supported device.

Will my credit card be charged at the time I sign up for the one-month free trial?
Nope. You will not be billed until after your one-month free trial ends. If you enjoy your Skybrary trial, do nothing at the end of your trial and your subscription will automatically continue for as long as you choose to remain a member. There are no commitments and you can easily cancel anytime by turning off auto-renew in your account settings.

How much does the subscription cost?
Your first month of Skybrary is automatically free! Your child can explore everything the service has to offer in the one-month free trial period. Subscription options are $4.99 a month or $39.99 annually. No matter what subscription you choose, you'll be able to access all of our books and videos on the Web, iPads, and iPhones.

Is there a limit to how many books my child can read each month?
Nope, our service is unlimited! To save space on your device we've designed Skybrary to allow kids to "check out" 5 books at a time (just like your local library) for offline reading. When you're connected to Wi-Fi, you can read as many books as you want without ever adding them to your backpack and filling those precious spots—just choose the book icon rather than the backpack one and you can read it right away.

Can my child read books offline?
Yes! Your child can add up to 5 books to their digital backback for reading with or without a Wi-Fi connection. After reading a book, they simply return it by dropping it into the return slot in their backpack and filling that spot with something new. These books can be kept in a backpack for as long as you'd like and switched out whenever you're connected to the Internet.

I have more than one child. Do I need to buy separate subscriptions for each one?
Nope! Each subscription includes 3 separate profiles, meaning that each of your children can enjoy, customize, and add to their own backpack.

Is Skybrary a safe environment for my child?
We offer an ad-free environment. Additionally, LeVar Burton has been a trusted advocate for children's literacy for over 30 years and LeVar Burton Kids is proud to bring quality literature into a digital space that is safe for kids. We take their safety and privacy very seriously; information is stored with the highest level encryption software and we never exchange or sell information to third parties. We are fully compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). To learn more, please see our Privacy Policy.

On which devices does Skybrary work?
With Skybrary's service, one sign-in enables you full access to your subscription, whether you are on the Web, iPads, and iPhones

Are you going to build Skybrary for Windows tablets, Gaming Platforms, etc.?
If there are platforms that will make us accessible to many more children, we’ll do our best to add them to the list in the future. Our team is continuing to look into it!

How fast does my internet connection have to be?
Download speeds slower than 0.5 megabits per second (Mbps) can have variable results. Visit Speedtest.net to test your download speed.

Which web browsers and operating systems are compatible with the Skybrary service?
On the Web: Latest versions of Chrome, Safari (on Mac), Firefox, IE 11 and IE11+
iPhone/iPad: Requires iOS 6.0 or later

Will it be available everywhere / every country?
YES! Skybrary is available everywhere in the world, unless the countries themselves have regional restrictions. We have no plans to limit where Skybrary can be accessed.

Will Skybrary be available in other languages?
We would love to expand the reach of Skybrary and we’re exploring possibilities to add foreign language books into Skybrary. As of now, we have no immediate plans to translate the application itself (i.e., the user interface) into non-English languages.

How do I load books if Parental Restrictions are enabled on my iOS device?
Sorry. We have a known issue where books don't load if parental restrictions are enabled on an iOS device.

To get around this, go to:
Settings > General > Restrictions > Websites > Add a Website (under Allow These Websites)

From here you need to add the following three sites as Allowed Websites:
1. rrkidz.com
2. skybrary.org
3. vimeo.com
This will unblock access to our services from within the app and the books should work great.

I’m having problems with my app. Can you help?
Yes! We're here to help! Feel free to get in touch with our support team. You can even contact us from within your Skybrary App:
1. Tap the Settings gear in the lower left corner of the screen.
2. Tap "Need help?”
Please be as specific as possible in your description of the problem.
